Can Your Job Make You Fat?

According to a judge in Brazil? Yes, your job CAN make you fat and because you ate on the job, you should be awarded a ton of money for all the weight you gained….Let me explain. This article tells how a young man in Brazil actually sued his employer, McDonald’s, because he gained weight while working there. And the part that really pisses me off? The judge agreed!? I thought I’d heard all the excuses for why people can’t lose weight, or why they don’t want to exercise (I’m guilty too!) but this one seriously takes the cake.

I’m sick of people not taking responsibility for their life and their actions. This man could have exercised; knowing full well that working in a fast food restaurant could cause weight gain if you snack…so of course you need to off-set the choices you make.  This is COMMON-FREAKING-SENSE and I don’t understand why that concept is so hard for some to grasp. I know what it’s like to gain weight, I feel for the guy; I’m sure he felt crappy and tired but lets not forget he was in control of the situation the entire time. He made the decision to work there, eat there and NOT do something to burn the calories. Simple math: if you put greasy high-caloric food in your body day after day and not burn some of those calories, you gain weight…

The article mentions he felt obligated to taste everything to ensure it was up to the high standards the company enforces. (Huh? OK that’s another story on it’s own!) If was serious about this statement, tasting should mean a bite or two at the most…it doesn’t mean to consume 2 Big Macs to make sure they’re OK for public consumption. He says he was given free food for lunch…could have packed a lunch, or opted for the salad, or *something*. There is always an option.

This just reinforces everything that is wrong about not only the judicial system, but of our lives and the way people are choosing to live. Accept responsibility…take action…treat your body and mind with respect….common stuff you know?

Jeez, who the hell can I sue?

Mario Does Veg

I have to admit I was a little surprised to read celeb chef Mario Batali was in the process of writing a vegetarian cookbook. I absolutely love watching the Food Network but often had to change the channel if too much meat was being flung around. Now while Mario did introduce me to a side of Italian eating I hadn’t seen before, I just couldn’t handle the odd cuts of meat (cheek, tail etc). I realize they are delicacies and all that, and I’m not one to push my beliefs on anyone….HOWEVER…I chose to not watch. An article in the New York Daily News reads he has confirmed he is writing it and also that he has cut down his meat consumption to five days a week. I don’t care what a person cuts their meat intake to, just the fact they are cutting it makes all the difference. It tells me they are aware, they are willing to make a change…and who knows, five days may go to three and so on and so on….

Little steps…

So yay I say to Mario for penning a vegetarian book! Stay tuned for the info.

Is Gluten-Free the way to go?

Maybe it’s because I’m going through some digestive health issues, but it seems to me that ALOT of women I know are experiencing varying degrees of medical problems involving digestion and intestinal upset. Right now, I know of 6 women personally who are going through *something* that is equally frustrating and disheartening. They’ve all struggled through their doctors testing and re-testing…of living with some kind of pain…and of experimenting what they can and cannot eat successfully. I don’t know if it’s my little world, or is this a sign of something bigger?

Personally speaking, I don’t do alot of dairy. This isn’t because I’m a vegetarian (if I was a Vegan I would abstain from eating dairy) but rather because I feel my body can’t handle it properly and it just causes me too much discomfort in the end. I love my cereal but have found a soy milk I love (Silk) and eat cheese in moderation…

My next avenue to explore is a gluten-free diet. Gluten seems to be a major player in abdominal pain and in the 6 women I know of with issues, 3 are in some stage of attempting to go gluten free. It’s like a last ditch attempt at a pain free and uplifting day…

So what’s a person to do? Go gluten free? Go Veg? I firmly believe everything we put into our bodies must be something we are ABSOLUTELY POSITIVE is the right thing for us. We need to make conscious decisions and eat right….eat for LIFE.

In my research I’ve found some really great gluten free blogs and sites I wanted to share for those of you who may be looking down this avenue…

I’m really impressed with this site, Gluten Free Girl because it’s colorful, fun and the recipes are REAL. By that, I mean not frou-frou recipes that you have to hunt all over the city for a few weird ingredients that NOBODY in their right mind keeps in the kitchen. I’ve told a few people already about this blog and they love it….

A Gluten Free Day is another great blog mainly because the variety is really amazing….(plus the desserts!).

Stop over at I Am Gluten Free for one bloggers take on living gluten free and check out the yummy looking recipes!

All you have to do is Google “gluten free” for a wealth of information. This is definitely a road I’m considering taking, I’m just not 100% sure yet…I’m taking one day at a time and making sure I give my body the absolute best…

I’d love to hear YOUR story.

Making Fiber First…

I’ve got a confession to make. Some recent visits to my doctor have made me realize I don’t get enough FIBER and I need to change this pronto. We all know fiber keeps things moving along, right? It’s good to be regular but sometimes we associate fiber with scary foods like *shudder* those dry bran muffins always sitting in the day old section in the cafeteria. Who ever buys those??

While fiber isn’t the answer to all my digestive issues and abdominal pain….it’s a good place to start. Of course fruits and veggies are an excellent source of fiber- but we all know that. Don’t we? If you’re not already cooking with whole wheat pasta and/or brown rice, this is yet another good reason to make the switch. I think these alternatives are much more filling than their white counterparts, and no, you DON’T sacrifice taste at all! When foods are processed, such as white pasta and white bread, the fiber is removed.

And since I’m praising the Quinoa Plant, I might as well put in yet another plug for this little pseudo-grain; yup, full of fiber!

Don’t forget nuts. I love to snack on raw almonds, pecans and walnuts, as well as sunflower and pumpkin seeds. Just make sure you enjoy nuts in moderation since they do have some fat…but it’s a good fat, really. Throw some on top of salads, put some into 100 calorie baggies and throw in your purse for a mid-morning snack.

Beans, beans and beans. I love my legumes. I’m a Veggie so getting my beans in is easy…but even my meat-eating friends incorporate beans into their meals. A friend of mine actually purees beans into all her pasta sauces and her kids are none the wiser! To them it’s “spaghetti and red sauce” and to Mom it’s fiber and protein!

I have been playing around with a bran muffin recipe I found awhile back and have now got it where I want it. Since applesauce is used in place of fat (butter, oil etc) these muffins are practically fat free! The recipe calls for whole wheat flour and yes, some white flour but I’ve found with ALL whole wheat, the muffins just don’t rise enough and are too dense. I throw in whatever I’ve got in my house; fruit, nuts, coconut, raisins, cranberries and/or chocolate chips (for a little bit of indulgence). I hope you like them as much as me!

1 1/2 cups bran (I’ve found works equally well with oat or wheat bran)

1 cup milk

1/2 cups applesauce (prefer unsweetened)

1 egg

2/3 packed brown sugar

1/2 tsp vanilla

1 tsp baking soda

1 tsp baking powder

1/2 cup whole wheat flour,  1/2 cup all purpose flour

1/2 tsp salt

Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.

Mix the bran and milk together in a small bowl and let sit for about 10 minutes.

Meanwhile mix the applesauce, egg, brown sugar and vanilla in a seperate bowl. Stir in the bran mixture until smooth.

In another bowl mix together the dry ingredients.

Stir in the wet bran mixture into the dry, careful not to over mix here.

Fold in whatever goodies you want to add and spoon into lightly oiled muffin tins. I found they stick to paper muffin liners so I spray my tins with Lite Pam.

Cook for 15-20 minutes…I check mine at 16 minutes!

ENJOY!

Potassium. Load Up!

So for those of you who read me regularly you know I have posted about my bad back. I also have serious knots going on all throughout it, that sometimes render me pretty useless. Like today. My back was pretty much seized up and I made it through the day slightly drugged up on robaxacet…and cut my work day short by an hour. This isn’t a good way to live or function. I was talking to my dear friend tonight and she mentioned she had ‘heard’ something about potassium helping with muscle pain. I admit I had not heard this before so I looked into it…and I was floored. I knew it was an important nutrient obviously, but I didn’t know ALL that it did and why exactly I should make sure to have it in my diet.

So benefit number one has got to be that a diet rich in potassium may reduce the risk of high blood pressure and strokes, and we all know that is good news. But did you know that sufficient potassium in your diet can also soothe feelings of anxiety, stress and irritability?

If you’re lacking potassium in your diet, you could experience serious fatigue, a slow down of reflexes and muscle cramping. (of course I must state if you are feeling like this for an extended period of time, you really need to go to the doctor to rule out anything else…). Lately, I’ve been feeling like I’m trying to walk against the current, constantly being pushed back but too exhausted to find another route. I do know a part of it is the winter blues and a combination of some other life issues going on…but this information about potassium really strikes a chord in me. I feel I need to up my potassium intake; I need to see if it helps with my back seizing up. I figure I have NOTHING to lose, right?

So how will I get this extra potassium? Well, a banana has 400 mg….and what is more convenient than putting one of these bad boys in your lunch bag or grabbing one on the go? All my research seems to indicate the recommended daily intake should be 3500-4000 mg but realistically, we eat about half of that a day. Most fruits and vegetables are a great source of potassium so make sure to always get enough….

Other potassium rich foods are:

- Lima Beans: 1 cup has 1000 mg. I love this bean. Seriously. With a smidge of butter and pepper.
- Cantaloupe: 1/2 of a 5″ melon has 975 mg. Yum! Quick snack? 1/2 melon with cottage cheese.
- Potato: 1 medium sized tater has around 900 mg and really, is there a more versatile veggie??
- Fresh OJ: 1 cup will give you 975 mg.
- Papaya: 785 mg in 1 papaya. I do not eat enough of this fruit….

This is really only a handful of the foods out there….bottom line, if we’re eating a balanced and nutritious diet with the fruits and veggie requirements our bodies need, then everything is good. Personally speaking, I’m adding a little extra potassium to my daily diet!

I’m seeing GREEN

Everything is coming up…..green??

Yup. Green baby…Check out Genuine Health’s website for more info on the benefits of making Greens part of your daily diet.

Do you take sugar-laden energy drinks? Find yourself drinking more than one cup of coffee a day? Are you sluggish and constantly wonder if your head is even connected to your body sometimes?

I’m so excited about this stuff! This has been something I have toyed with trying for years now…and it wasn’t until my dear friend (who wishes to remain anonymous, but lets call her something….) “Molly” told me how incredible she was feeling after a few days. A FEW DAYS! I trust her completely and her move in that direction made me realize I needed to kick my butt into a higher gear and follow.

Although it says ‘natural orange flavor’, don’t put too much faith in that. It still tastes like regular greens to me! Add to plain water or juice and drink up.

Enjoy!

I feel pretty, oh so pretty!

Since I’m always bumming around the Web, when I come across articles or blog posts that catch my eye I want to share them. That’s what happened with this post entitled What it Feels Like for a Girl that I stumbled across this evening. The author tells us about  the lengths a friend of hers go through to be attractive to her partner. I urge you to read the post because the style is really engaging and you will get a definite feel for what women feel they MUST do in order to be attractive.

I believe women fall into 2 categories: some do it for themselves and some do it for their partner or mate. I do think there are benefits to both…let me explain. I’m not saying you should do everything your partner wants you to do (in regards to your look) but if you know they like a certain ‘something’ it’s great to throw that into the mix every once in awhile right? But women should also be going through their lives looking HOW THEY WANT TO LOOK because they have to be comfortable in their own skin. This is so important and again, ties to the whole self-esteem issue I’ve talked about.

The post I read largely focuses on makeup. It got me to thinking about what I do on a daily basis. I like to think I’m low maintenance. Basically I tip my head upside down after I shampoo my hair and aim the dryer at it….no fussy styling. I will usually run the straightener through it if I have the time, only because it smooths out the frizzies my somewhat curly hair has. That’s it. As for makeup? Eyeliner. I need to wear it or my eyes disappear into my face. Seriously. I like a bit of color on my cheeks too because, the silly little girl in me, thinks it makes me look younger.

But other than that I’m pretty plain and I’m happy with that. I can’t imagine putting on face make up and powder every single day…I can’t imagine putting on full eye make up and choosing shadow colors every morning! It’s just not me. I think if a woman is happy with wearing make up daily, with wearing lingerie, or with getting waxed…then by all means DO IT.

Do it for yourself.

I shave my legs when I’m single…and I always paint my toenails, but never my fingernails….this never changes. There are certain things I do for myself…such as wear perfume! I need my scent. I’m lost without it.

Going back to feeling good about ourselves, these are the little things I do to feel good about MYSELF daily. Think about what you do daily, weekly or monthly, and WHY? Are you changing yourself for someone else? Or are you simply doing what you need to feel good?

Love life. Love yourself.
